Why don't you have the latest and greatest hardware and software? I have figured it out after over twenty years as a Computer Technician. Are you in one of these categories? Humor?
The number five reason to not buy a new computer: The technology is not supported by your operating system. Your computer is so old that the last driver update for the video was in 2003 when the manufacturer moved from VGA to Super VGA then went bankrupt. You haven't bought a new video card since then and don't plan on doing so until the one in your computer dies.

The number four reason to not buy a new computer: You favorite programs are no longer produced by the original publisher. The original publisher isn't in business anymore and you can not find a suitable replacement.
The number three reason to not buy a new computer: Your friend has had three computers since you bought (or built the custom computer you have) and the quality of the materials was so bad that they only lasted a couple of years. Yours however just keeps going and going and...
The number two reason to not buy a new computer: You have looked at the new offerings in different big box stores and web online stores. Nothing looks interesting, also you are not interested in being a guinea pig for the technical revolution the computer manufactures are pushing on everyone almost once a year.
The number ONE reason to not buy a new computer: The darn things just cost too much money and the latest and greatest Operating Systems are not appealing. You have your computer setup the way you like it, it maybe a little slow but you are in no hurry. It took you two years to lean how to setup the desktop and get everything organized, you really don't want to go through that again...
There you have it, the five top reasons why that beige box still looks so good and your Windows 98 is still going strong. Even though you can't read half of the web sites you visit you hang on to that dinosaur and save your money.
However if you do decide to buy a new computer I would suggest you do some research in to the newer technology for hardware and software. Research in the long run will save you a lot of time and money correcting those 'Gotta have it NOW' decisions.
If you decide to do it yourself and build your new computer there are a lot of web sites that offer assistance in getting it 'just right' the first time, heck I have a complete section on mine and have written two books on the subject.
